Logs, Fishes, and those other forms of wave sliding

Surfing has become pretty individualistic. By that, I mean the shortboarders stick together, the loggers nose ride with one another, bodyboarders stay clear of the surfers, etc. Why cant we all learn to love? It's a simple concept, with a tough follow through. We all want to have a good time, catch at least one fun wave each session, and feel good about ourselves. By learning to surf WITH one another, rather than against each other, everyone stays happy. Granted this probably wont ever happen, that doesnt mean that we cant try! Loggers just need to let shortboarders catch some of the set waves, shortboarders would need to calm down a little and not scream at loggers, and bodyboarders would need to not drop in on everyone. If we work together, the whole community benefits. We all have one similarity: wave sliding. the difference is how we do it, but the concept is still the same. As long as we remember the spirit of Aloha, all will work itself out.

Math

Beans??

“Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. I’m sorry to interrupt whatever kind of stupid street fair this is, but I need your attention for one moment. I’ve lost my little brother. I was over there buying a gyro and, while my back was turned, he simply dissapeared. So, if everyone could please just keep an eye out for my brother. His name is Russell, but everyone calls him ‘Beans’ for short.  He kind of looks like me, but with longer hair and a bigger beard. Oh, and he doesn’t wear glasses. Actually, he doesn’t wear much of anything. Basically, you should all be looking for a big fat dude wearing little boy’s underwear and hightop sneakers. Beeeeeaaaaans! Beans, wheeeere aaaaare yoooou?”

Summer...

So Summer is right around the corner. That means it's goodbye to big winter swells and hello to small summer bumps. Goodbye to those cold January mornings where you swear you'll never surf another morning in a cold, damp wetsuit, and hello to dry boardshorts and sunburns. Goodbye to booties, and hello to warm water wax. Goodbye to the short faster boards, and hello to those loggy logs.  And most importantly, goodbye to wonderful school friends till next year, and hello to those old friends who went away to school and are returning. Ready or not, here we come...

TOMS backyard party

This past weekend, I attended a TOMS backyard party that took place at the beautiful Young Hall basketball court that overlooks the Pacific. It was about 3 hours long, they had music playing all night long (Triceratron and The Delmartians), food  (popcorn, chips and guac, and cookies with lemonade). Not only was TOMS selling shoes, but they had an art booth where you could paint and draw on your TOMS. There was also a  Yeller booth which is "an artist collaborative whose mission is to establish a curatorial art brand." All in all it was a really successful night for all who attended.

Living Situation

This is where I've been living the past year with a great roommate, Geron. He has managed to stay sane through my lame shenanigans.

Sea Surfboards

I just found out about these guys... based out of Byron Bay, New South Wales, Aus. It looks like these guys have stumbled upon to something really sick. Going with the Gato Heroi, Dano approach, they have artists do alot of the work on the boards, making them one of a kind. Check them out at http://seasurfboards.com
